Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has initiated “Operation Robocall Roundup,” a bipartisan, multistate campaign led by the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force. The initiative aims to address the issue of illegal robocalls across the United States.

Attorney General Skrmetti, along with 50 other attorneys general, has sent warning letters to 37 telecommunications companies. These letters demand that the companies stop allowing illegal robocalls to be routed through their networks.

“Tennesseans should be able to answer their phones without being harassed or targeted by scammers,” said Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti. “These companies failed to meet the most basic requirements to prevent illegal robocalls, essentially rolling out the red carpet for bad actors. Our bipartisan coalition is demanding that they clean up their networks and stop facilitating these scams.”

The targeted companies have not complied with federal anti-robocall rules. This includes failing to respond to government requests for tracing calls, not registering with required federal databases, or neglecting to submit mandatory plans on reducing illegal robocalls within their systems. Such failures have allowed scammers easier access to Tennessee consumers.

Additionally, 99 other telecommunications providers are being notified that they are doing business with these non-compliant firms and warned about potential violations of federal regulations.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced it will remove seven of these 37 non-compliant companies from its Robocall Mitigation Database. As a result, other telecom providers will no longer be permitted to accept or route calls originating from those networks.

The Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force was established in 2022 when 51 attorneys general joined forces. The group investigates and takes legal action against entities responsible for significant volumes of illegal and fraudulent robocall traffic entering and moving across the country.
